Input the required details and begin to create your ‘Profile’.

Add a photo. It’s important …and one with a smile is best.

Add a ‘Summary Paragraph’. A sort of 10-second introduction.

List current and past positions. You will need at least three positions in total to help you get towards a 100% complete profile.

Add your education.

Remember to add in the dates of all of the above (if you can remember…)

You’ll be prompted to search for people you may be connected to on Linkedin. This is usually via your Outlook or email provider. It’s OK to input your passwords, it only does this search once and it’s a quick way to find people you know.

When you have found someone – invite them to connect with you.

An automatic message ‘I’d like to add you to…etc.’ will be sent to them. You can edit this before it goes to make it personal (please do so, it’s good online manners and also reminds the person where they know you from.)

You can also search for connections by checking past colleagues at companies or past classmates at Colleges, Schools, etc.

5 Reasons to use LinkedIn

Groups. What better way to keep professional members of the online community informed about products and company information than a group? LinkedIn groups function as a forum for members to have real-world conversations about products, issues, opportunities, events, and referrals of information. For virtually every segment of technology, there is a corresponding group available. One group that I have recently joined for a hot area of technology is the VMware virtualization group. Here, discussions on real-world scenarios offer good information to members on topics ranging from problem-solving to company news and job opportunities.

Events. LinkedIn event creation is a newer offering that allows you to create events. LinkedIn Events correspond to real events, such as tradeshows, conferences, and training events. This emerging segment will become a mechanism for events to be accessible to networks of members where professional interests align.

Company profiles. LinkedIn offers company profiles that can be modified by members. Companies are making it a priority to see that these descriptions, information, and company logos are used correctly on LinkedIn. Social media and marketing groups try to ensure not only that the information is accurate but also that it is the kind of information that best promotes the company. While LinkedIn requires a company e-mail address for contributors to be able to edit a company profile, that doesn’t necessarily ensure that it is a company-authorized individual making them.

Jobs. LinkedIn has job information through partnerships with Dice and SimplyHired. Ensuring that your advertised positions go beyond Monster.com and into LinkedIn is an extra step that can use the leverage of the LinkedIn network. The beauty is that if one person is not interested in the position, the position can be referred to someone who might be a good fit for the role. This extra link can assist in finding the right candidates in a tough hiring market.

The price is right. Most of LinkedIn services are free, so why not take advantage of the extra placement? While the risk of not embracing social media for organizations is not quantified, the cost of embracing it is low.

Sometimes it’s better to write things down to get it off your chest rather than let it eat away at you. After all the amount in question is a measly £1.20.
It went like this :

Frenchgate Parking

On returning to my car after a quick shopping trip in Doncaster (Frenchgate parking) I approached ticket machine no6 with wallet in hand swiftly placing my ticket to be read “£1.20 due” firstly my coins would not go in? So I tried my debit card which also would not work. Pressing the button for attention I politely pointed out my predicament and was advised that they already knew of the problem and to proceed to a pay point on level 2. Sound ok, at this point.
On reaching the new DOUBLE pay point, I joined a line a patiently waited my turn, only to be faced with a screen saying “self diagnosing” so moving across to the other line finally placed my card in and was presented with a bill for £2.40! double my original charge.
With a growing line behind me chose not to press for the attendant but quietly pay and move on in life.
now I know it’s only £1.20 but the point is if these machines can do this to 1000′s of people a week it could be classed as organised crime! Have you been a victim in similar circumstances?
